Evaluation demands that you approach an idea with an open mind, which you be willing to consider its validity on the basis of the evidence presented, not on the basis of any preconceptions you might have. It requires that you be willing to change your ideas if the evidence suggests that you should. And it demands that you make and effort to understand the purpose of what you are reading so that you won't criticize something for failing to do what it was not intended to do in the first place.
