we were walking in some busy district and he told me his observation
"see all the shops? every other guy in Taiwan owns a business. it's almost like bartering, exchanging goods for goods with each other. very little B2B, all E2E and R2R, entrepreneur-to-entrepreneur and retail-to-retail
you know why? because big businesses don't pay well. employees quit and start their own business. if big businesses pay better, they'd face much less competiton from these small businesses"
i told him i had similar observation 27 years ago but with a slightly different conclusion: with all the small business operations, wealth is more evenly distributed among the population than if a few big corporations control most of the commerce
