americans like their way of life. that's great. US is a big, developed, advanced, vibrant and dynamic country, in which there are enough interesting and important things and events that keep their people pre-occupied and busy. but there's a drawback: most americans are relatively parochial. they know very little about the outside world. and they aren't keen to find out. as a super power involved and having a say in almost every int'l activity, event and issue, it's of utmost importance to know very well how others think, live, feel, their cultures, customs, traditions, history, religions, languages, social structures, etc. america lacks enough knowledgeble and skillful foreign affairs personnel. bush is extremely parochial and voters didn't think it mattered. and he turned out to be a disaster, talked into starting an unnecessary war by his hawkish cabinet members.
