Somebody says politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. :o) I am not interested in politics but in history of bridge.
The first bridges were pieces of wood that someone placed across a stream. These bridges were not very strong. If too many people tried to cross at one time, the bridges broke and people fell into the water! Later people made bridges of stone. The Roman made some very good bridges of stone and many of these are still standing today. Sometimes, however, no one could build a bridge across a river. The river was too wide and too deep and the water was too strong. If there was no bridge, people had to use boats to cross.
