The three men and three women share each other's successes and failures. As with any group of friends they laugh at each other, argue, fight and then cry on each others' shoulders and make up. Long time viewers of the show watched the characters age and mellow as they married, divorced and changed jobs.
Of course, the show was much more exciting and interesting than real life, but, when it started, none of the actors was very well-known, so ordinary people really seemed to relate to them and their lives.
