Houses of the time were no more than simple huts without windows or doors into which it was easy for snakes, scorpions or rats to penetrate. As many of the poisonous snakes of South and Central America won't climb anywhere higher than the length of their bodies, hammocks offered a natural method of protection from an unpleasant nighttime surprise. They were also multi-functional by design: a hammock at night could become an effective fishing net during the day! And, as the hammock spread around the world, people worked on improving the basic design.
