Tuneless tunes. That's what many popular hits nowadays are. They're very much deficient in melody. And good melody is the soul of music.
But don't get me wrong. Most hits in any time period aren't melodic enough to be considered good music. The relatively few good ones will always be fondly remembered from gereration to generation.
